Does President Trump want a Reichstag Fire?

Post by lpetrich » Sat Feb 03, 2018 4:24 am

Sources just revealed Trump is contemplating war with N. Korea to save his presidency
An op-ed in Korea’s leading independent daily newspaper, Hankyoreh, tweeted by the Wall Street Journal‘s Seoul bureau chief, Jonathan Cheng, divulged that White House National Security Council senior director for Asian Affairs, Matthew Pottinger, said, “in a recent closed-door meeting with U.S. experts on Korean Peninsula issues that a limited strike on the North “might help in the midterm elections.”

The editorial reveals that South Koreans fear that Trump, in order to save his failing presidency, will attempt a “bloody nose” strategy, unleashing a pre-emptive missile strike against North Korea’s nuclear facilities, in the wake of the U.S. president’s game of nuclear chicken with dictator, Kim Jong-Un.
Something like the fire in the German parliament building in early 1933, a fire that Nazi leaders howled about as proof that the Communists were on the march. They demanded extraordinary powers to fight this menace, and they soon got those powers. Half a year later, their coalition partners disbanded their parties and the Nazis outlawed all political parties but theirs.

Don’t Kid Yourself: Trump Wants a Terrorist Attack | HuffPost has some speculation:
But there’s another ploy at work, and Trump is chomping at the bit. All of our Facebook posts and tweets and marches and petitions and calls to Congress will be meaningless and stripped away faster than you can say “Death to Dixie Chicks” if we stand down when another terrorist attack hits the United States.

The White House is counting on that, not only to keep ’45 in office but to push for an Autocratic regime. After the suppression comes the stripping of human rights, free speech, protests, anything that can make you, not just journalists, an enemy of the people. Stalin loved Trump’s borrowed phrase, and that be should enough to terrify any United States citizen.
The Nazis did not stop with that building fire. In the late 1930's, they were making advance after advance without firing a shot. Remilitarizing the Rhineland, annexing Austria, and taking over parts of Czechoslovakia. But Poland's leaders were more stubborn, and the Nazis staged an attack on a border outpost to "prove" that Poland was attacking them and that they had to respond. Which they did, starting World War II.

Americans cannot claim to be sinless here. Consider the Gulf of Tonkin attack, used as a pretext for expanding the Vietnam War, and the alleged weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. There were also once some plans to do fake Cuban terrorist attacks, to manufacture a pretext for attacking Cuba: (Wikipedia)Operation Northwoods.

Most radicals secretly or non-secretly long to live in the "interesting times" that others fear and avoid. How can he be the next Andrew Jackson if there are no Limeys, Creeks, or Maroons to shoot at?

The villains of Jackson's day (Trump is vocal about his love of the Jackson presidency, and his desire to emulate it). The Creek Confederacy, or Muskokw, was formerly located in a wide swath of US Southeast, where Tennessee and Alabama are now; Jackson first came to national prominence as an "Indian Fighter" during the Creek/Red Stick wars. Maroons were escaped slave communities, often mingled with displaced Indians, religious refugees and others. The British, of course, invaded the country during the war of 1812, and were met by Jackson's militia at New Orleans, resulting in our only significant victory of that war.

Apologies for overly quippy response! I have little respect for Trump, so he tends to encourage one-liners from my quarter.

As in Naomi Klein? She has written a lot about what she calls the Shock Doctrine, exploiting calamities to push authoritarian or crony-capitalist agendas. However, in what I've read of her writings, she does not discuss the Reichstag fire very much.

The Nazis tried something similar to start the European part of World War II. They remilitarized the Rhineland, they annexed Austria, and they took over parts of Czechoslovakia, all without much resistance. But Poland's leaders were more stubborn, and the Nazis recognized that they'd have to start a shooting war. So they had a big propaganda campaign about how Poland was planning to make war on Germany, and at the end of August in 1939, Poland attacked the German border output at Gleiwitz, now Gliwice in Poland. Or so it seemed -- it was some Nazi fakery to "justify" attacking Poland. Which they soon did.

The US cannot claim to be sinless here.

In 1898, the US battleship Maine suffered a big explosion when it was docked in Havana's harbor. Some newspaper publishers howled that it was an attack by Spain, and some US politicians were itching for some pretext to build an overseas empire. "Remember the Maine!", they shouted. Thus, the Spanish-American war, where the US grabbed Cuba and the Philippines from Spain.

In 1964, US and North Vietnamese warships exchanged fire in the Gulf of Tonkin, and some US politicians called it aggression by North Vietnam. They then turned their assistance to South Vietnam into full-scale war: the Vietnam War.

In 2001, after the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, the Bush II administration came out with its "Patriot Act", something that gave it a lot more police powers. A few years later, that administration used that attack and Iraq's alleged weapons of mass destruction as pretexts for attacking Iraq.
