Helping persecuted secularists

Post by DMB » Mon Oct 03, 2016 8:26 am

As you may be aware, a number of secular bloggers have been threatened or even killed in Islamic countries such as Saudi Arabia and Bangladesh. Now thee Center for Inquiry has set up a fund to help them and/or their families. If you would be interested in contributing to this worthy cause, see more here.

Thank you for this. I was not aware of these violations even though it should be no surprise.

Can you tell me more about the Center for Inquiry? Have you supported them yourself in the past and find them worthy of supporting?

ETA: I found their youtube channel and I am getting a good feel for them from it.

CFI is a Humanist movement. It was originally called "Secular humanists" when the late Paul Kurtz fell out with the AHA over the latter's inclusion of religious Humanists. He eventually merged the SH with the Skeptics organisation that he had also founded and called the whole thing CFI. They have a number of branches throughout the USA as well as some international links. They publish two magazines, Free Inquiry and Skeptical Inquirer. Paul Kurtz also founded the publisher Prometheus Books.

When Kurtz ceased to run CFI, the hatchet was buried between CFI and the AHA,

I am a supporter of both CFI and AHA, although since I have stopped visiting America my only contact is by email and the two magazines mentioned above.
