I first got to know about this because I saw a semi-fictional BBC programme about it a couple of years ago. It is a most extraordinary story of keeping satire alive under horrific conditions.
I didn't know about the Wipers Times. Thanks for posting.
Oddly enough, though, I did know about Bruce Bairnsfather. I stumbled across a very used collection of his cartoons at about age twelve, and they've stayed with me ever since.
I recommend scrolling down in the link to the brief cartoon roll and having a look at the few they reproduce. Bairnsfather is where I discovered black humor.
