DavidB: Tributes
I posted so much in the belief that I have that thoughts and feelings felt deeply and thrown out to the Universe will reach a person I care for and who is ill or, I now accept it, dead....
that word seems so heavy and I hate it... but Cath I hope you could get some of what I was feeling and how I cared to him. I am crying now... truly grief stricken.
And to you Cath and all your family my sympathy

Cath B,
I've been away from the Cafe for a few weeks due to a minor illness.
And, so I returned and found that David had left the scene.
Please know how much I admire you for all that you are and have been to David.
I cannot find the words to express my admiration for David.
He was a gift to each one of us.

Thank you David B
I would like to convey to all here how much I appreciated David's writing over at Cranmer's Blog. It was always reassuring to see how he presented his views as measured and calmly in what I can only best describe as the 'thinking man's/woman's atheist'.
The fact that Cranmer himself, made time to mark his passing speaks volumes for the integrity of both men who are polar opposites regarding religion yet managed to exhibit the best of blog etiquette while holding on to their core convictions.
I shall miss David's contributions immensely. My condolences to his family and friends.

Oh Cath. I couldn't post when I first heard, and was then at a loss for something sensible to say.
Still am, really.
It was an honour to know David, and to meet him the once. He was probably the most genuinely, simply, honestly thoughtful person I've ever known.
And he managed to find out the eating habits of an IIDB Admin.

Argumentum ab faecem excogitarem is a fallacy, no matter how inventive you are.

Were you at II in 2007 when all that went down Cath?
That was when a lot of people noticed David for the first time given his starring role - and I think the reason he got that was that TOM saw the same attributes in him then that many have spoken of now, of being a wise and gentle listener who nonetheless could cut to the chase.

fear is the mind killer
It's the exchange he had with Michael that had me remembering his reasonableness and calm rationality, honestly. No matter what jokes might have been pulled from that, David's intention was to have a discussion on the issues at hand. Not to take cheap shots.
Rationality, at the height of the Great Unpleasantness, was, as I've said, thin on the ground. He was an exemplar of someone who was trying to cut through the crap without being an asshole about it.
Which made him one of the good guys.

Oh yes, I remember it well.
David had been urging me to join IIDB for ages but I'd not long done so when it all went badly wrong and I followed David into a nomadic existence till we settled down here.

I'm meeting the undertaker again in a couple of hours.
I just looked out of the window. It's high tide on a calm bright morning. Of course the sea will be bitterly cold at the start of March, but I suddendly had a hiraeth for going for a swim as I used to most warm days in my Tenby summer youth and get away from all this.

You have been and are continuing to be amazing. When you've finished all the organising I expect you'll feel a bit low, but you should feel really satisfied with the way that you've coped. I hope you get lots of support from your family.
