Another Trump lie

Post by DMB » Mon May 08, 2017 5:53 pm

What a surprise!

Trump claims that the Obama administration had given Flynn security clearance, but actually Obama had personally warned him about Flynn.
Former Acting Attorney General Sally Yates is set to testify before a Senate subcommittee today about her warnings to the White House about Flynn's ties to Russia. Yates is expected to tell the committee that she warned White House Counsel Don McGahn several weeks before Flynn was forced to resign that Flynn had lied when he denied discussing US sanctions in his conversations with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak.

A senior Trump administration official acknowledged Monday that Obama raised the issue of Flynn, saying the former president made clear he was "not a fan of Michael Flynn." Another official said Obama's remark seemed like it was made in jest...

...According to all three former officials, Obama warned Trump against hiring Flynn. The Obama administration fired Flynn in 2014 from his position as head of the Defense Intelligence Agency, largely because of mismanagement and temperament issues.

The title "Another Trump Lie" is not very helpful.

In fact, it would be rarer and more interesting to have a thread whenever Trump did not tell a lie.

President # 1 to president #45

1 - couldn't tell a lie

45 - can't tell the truth

# 37 was much like 45 in that way, too.

And then what happened next:

There's a lot to this, so I don't want to quote little bits. Please read the whole thing.

Technically this isn't a lie so much as Trump's method of misleading his supporters and giving them something to keep reality at bay. It can be said that Obama's administration gave Flynn the highest security clearances. After all, Obama nominated him to head the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) in 2012. Flynn retired a year early in 2014, with rumors flying that he had been forced out because of his bizarre management style and tendency to invent facts. I think Trump fell in love with Flynn precisely because Flynn was a fellow conspiracy nut--someone he could relate to.

During the Yates testimony, Trump was watching and tweeted again the line about Obama giving Flynn top clearances, ignoring what happened after Flynn was forced out and those clearances were removed. It is true that Obama warned him not to hire Flynn, but Trump is a conspiracy nut. He would not trust Obama or the intelligence community to give him the truth, because he sees them as all conspiring to destroy his presidency. This is consistent with Trump hiring conspiracy nuts like Bannon. It doesn't matter what Bannon's critics say, because they are conspiring to cover up the truth.
